Snow or Sand.......that is the question!

Sometimes I see a picture like this....early snow in Germany today.....

...and that makes me REAL glad I live in LA.............

But, then I see a picture like this, and I'm not so sure!.......Is that CUTE or WHAT?

Snow in reasonable amounts is a lot of fun. Excessive Snow and cold is a pain in several places.

Hey Z, the trick is to make that two hour drive to the local mountains after a snow, bundle up, make a snowman, take some pictures, stop into a diner for some hot cocoa, and drive two hours to get home. You might even have time for a walk on the beach.

Voila! A little bit of having it all!

This is why it would be tough to leave California.

JM...were you raised in SNOW? you sound like my Dad, from Troy, NY "Nothing with snow is nice or cute!"

Pris, you're right..I always say Californians can surf in the ocean and ski in the mountains on the same day......!!

Shoprat....I got to live with it a bit in Munich, but the whole time we lived in Paris, 4 years, it snowed the day we were leaving for a Christmas visit to LA and once again.>Snowed BIG TIME about a week after we'd moved home..boohoo!!
The first snowfall was very light but I was hanging out our window like Scrooge telling the little boy to buy a BIG GOOSE! BOy, was this California girl excited..but, alas...not much more snow fell!!

The mechanic in me is in LOVE with that VW. It's about time for a little project anyway. If I find an old VW and get my torch and welder out..........

Uh ... what's all that white stuff on the ground? Snow? Great! Since LA was here, it's been colder than a well-digger's butt in January. I'll probably wake up tomorrow and see that stuff all over the place.

Darn that LA.

Let that be a lesson to everyone. Think twice ... no, make that think thrice about inviting him down for a few days.

Did I mention he ate my last piece of chocolate cake?

I knew snow for 7 years of my life and that was enough to cure me for life. I love the heat & that's why I live in Florida. Heck, I'm not happy when the temperature is below 60!

I lived a few years in the midwest and that is all the snow this Southern gal will ever need for the rest of my life!

I love the snow, too, Pops, but I hear it's hard to take when it's slushy and gray!

::sigh::

I miss snow.
It only ices here, and everyone FREAKS out and cancels everything.

tee hee.

I miss big snows, four foot snow drifts, and big huge snowmen.

Fun stuff.

But that LA weather must be nice, too! ;-)

pinky's right about the icy roads in texas. they are awful.

pris is totally right on - drive somewhere, visit the snow, take pics of the snow, make the snowman, then go home to nice comfortable warms and dry roads. :-)

i remember having to visit in-laws in indiana for christmas. every year i went, for some reason, they would have a snowstorm right after we got there, and i would be stuck in a house with my in-laws for days at a time.....

stuck...

in a house....

with my in-laws.....

without access to civilization...

for days at a time.

:sigh: now it's the new girlfriend's turn to do that. :-)

The snow can be SO much fun, for three days and while I'm on vacation! I lived in Minnesota until I was 11. Some of my fondest memories took place on the hockey rink and sledding down the hills on recess. If you lived within a mile and half of school, the buses didn't pick you up, so my sister and I had to walk the mile through deep snow most winters. For the most part these were great memories.
Now I feel sorry for myself when it get's in the 30's here in Jacksonville, FL. LOL! How silly.

sand

I just got pictures from Mr. Z's cousin in Germany "First snow" shots (Germany's covered right now already)

I decided it's definitely SAND for me. I can visit snow, yes. it's so lovely falling but I have to fess up to a tad bit of claustorphobia, and that white white heavy sky and now peek at blue above would get on my nerves after a few days, no DOUBT about it!!

Oddly we seldom saw large amounts of
snow like that in VT. They get alot of smaller dustings as early as October.

Sand, definitely.

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints,
other times there were one set of footprints.

This bothered me because I noticed
that during the low periods of my life,
when I was suffering from
anguish, sorrow or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints.

So I said to the Lord,
“You promised me Lord,
that if I followed you,
you would walk with me always.
But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life
there have only been one set of footprints in the sand.
Why, when I needed you most, you have not been there for me?”

The Lord replied,
“The times when you have seen only one set of footprints in the sand,
is when I carried you.”

Well, Alice....that could be written with footsteps in the snow, too, right!?

Beak..that's interesting..I'd have thought VT has really heavy snowfall..I imagine the ski resorts up high have that, right?

What the hell is "lake effect snow"? Here in FL we get much more rain during the summer when it's the hottest. The hot sun evaporates the Atlantic or Gulf, which in turn dumps rain on us. So how is it that the Great Lakes cause SO much precipitation--in the form of snow--when it's so dreadfully cold? Does anyone know? Is it just the temperature difference between the air and water that causes so much precipitation?

No, the air can't hold as much moisture in winter, especially when the temperatures fall below the dew point.

I've always wondered about the "lake effect" phenomenon too, because I live near Lake Tahoe, so here's a link explaining it. Where I am, however, on the East of the Sierra, we often get "shadowed out" of rain or snow from the lake area, including much of the Pacific Ocean fog that rolls across California only to dump it all in the mountains, and that's another phenomenon I've never fully grasped.

Not that I want that much snow, mind you (30 ft in some parts up there); it's the rain we need more. We often get the ice effect: a snow followed by melting followed by freezing. Very hazardous.

I could go for sand again, Z.

Yeah, i saw on the news yesterday that Britain is experiencing colder weather than Moscow now.

Must be that global warming we're hearing about all that time eh. Nice view you got there Z.

Thanks FJ, and CJ that was as a great explanation.
MK as usual thew leftists are 180 degrees out of phase with the truth! I get SUCH a kick out of the fact that snow and freezing temps seem to follow the Goreacle around.
