Why believe in GOD? Be good for GOODNESS' sake!!

From the AP: WASHINGTON, D.C. — You better watch out. There is a new combatant in the Christmas wars.

Ads proclaiming, "Why believe in a god? Just be good for goodness' sake," will appear on Washington, D.C., buses starting next week and running through December. The American Humanist Association unveiled the provocative $40,000 holiday ad campaign Tuesday....... .....Last month, the British Humanist Association caused a ruckus announcing a similar campaign on London buses with the message: "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life."
Z: Funny, the day I'D be really worried is the very day I was thoroughly convinced "there's probably no God." There's healthy doubt, of course........but imagine living without the promise, the solace, the strength? What are your thoughts on this?

1 John 5:20, "And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding, in order that we might know Him who is true, and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life."

The Marxists may have once again raised their heads, to spew forth all manner of filth in defiance of God ... in doing so, they exercise their right of free choice. Of course, I hope they also understand the consequences.

Oh, Mustang...I'm so much with you on consequences. What a perfect way to put it. Thanks.....

If there is no G_d, then I simply have to ask, "For goodness sake, WHAT is the good, then?"

Idiots.

When G_d dies there is only one world left. The world of "will to power."

I saw this today. I really do not understand why we cater to the smallest of minority in our country.

The real reason this is done at Christmastime is to despoil the celebration of Christmas, to cause believers discomfort, and to make Christmas a time fraught with controversy, instead of the joyful and celebratory time it has always been.

It's simply to ruin Christmastime, and minimize it's importance.

Which proves that these atheists, or humanists, by their very actions, do not possess the qualities of tolerance or charity towards others, so how good can they be? To be meanspirited does not reflect goodness.

Mustang - Well said.

A 2005 Harris poll showed 82% of American adults believe in God or a Higher Power. Why do we let the other 18% effect the vast majority?

I agree with my fellow Marine, Mustang- God gave us the priviledge of choice. All through history, people and even cultures have denied God. In the end, they will be denied spending eternity with Him...by choice. To live in eternity with that knowledge will truly be Hell.

Let me be the first to say Merry CHRISTmas to each of you. As always, you're on it geeeeeeZ.

I wrote an article about this on my blog a while ago. "A Conservative Answers An Atheist." It was a great give and take between Mike and DLAF at FrontPage, along with my thoughts. Z, you sent me this nice snippet from Owen Gingerich which is way beyond fascinating!

As usual, you ALL say it better than I can! Thanks so much..I was really curious as to your responses.

it IS a Christmas time thing, purposefully at this time, isn't it? Sometimes I think the goodness and sweetness of Christmas REALLY bugs some people!

Honestly, I SWEAR, I think that obama will say that "Since Christmas is a national holiday, so should Ramadan be...or Kwansa..." or whatever thing he decides. OR, it won't BE a national, school and store-closing holiday. Sounds nuts, but I really do think this could happen.

We ARE catering to the minority! But, seriously, WHY would a store like TARGET or WALMART pander to the slight minority? If you were a retailer, wouldn't you do HUGE CHRISTMAS signs and CHRISTMAS Tree lots (not 'holiday trees'...what the heck other holiday HAS a tree, anyway?!), etc? WHAT is with them playing DOWN the holiday MOST AMERICANS observe and pay so much for (gifts, decorations, music) in order to create a beautiful Christmas for themselves? Does it make sense?

You know, Morgan, one of the wonderful commenters here, is Jewish and he celebrates Christians and even says he thinks America would be better off with more devout Christians...is HE griping about Christmas trees in lots? Is he offended? NO! I once asked a dear Jewish friend (who I must admit DID become a believer a few years later) if HE minded growing up with Christmas music in stores, etc...He said "OH, ya, Z....I hate to see joyful little children and hear beautiful music and go to lovely office parties, etc." (very sarcastically, of course!) In other words; why diss Christmas?

The agenda should be suspect. I'm glad you're all suspecting! WE HAVE TO FIGHT, FOLKS!! Who would have thought THAT would happen in AMERICA?!

Z,and all of you wonderful Christians here,

1 John 5:13
"These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may KNOW that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God."

No doubts -- no second thoughts, no regrets when we put our faith in Jesus Christ for our eternal life -- IT IS ETERNAL.

No doubt!

Everyone, have a very merry and exciting CHRISTday every day.

In Christ eternally,

ExP(Jack)

You're right Z. I do thank G-d above for good, G-d fearing Christians. Traditional Christians and Jews form the moral bulwark for Conservative America. We here in America stand on the backs of giants, and most of them knew the Lord G-d of heaven and earth. FJ was EXACTLY right. When man makes himself into god, we end up with nothing more than the will to power.

The evidence for God's existence is evident enough for those who see it and sparse for those who don't want to see it and I think it's supposed to be that way for a while.

One of the best blogs for a continuous discussion of the reality of God's existence is One Cosmos where Gagdad Bob (and he sometimes has me gagging and other times thinking deeply) discusses the reality of God, reasons to believe in Him, and the significance of His existence, even though they get a little esoteric at times.

It hilarious that those who do not believe in God still feel a need to dedicate their lives to throwing that opinion in people's faces. If you truly have no belief in God then wouldn't you just ignore the subject? The extent that they rail against God or Christianity only serves to show the importance of God.

Morgan, you make me even prouder to be an America..and that's QUITE something.

As you say "the only thing we disagree with is Jesus' Daddy" I loooove that.
I honor your openness and love and confidence. La Chaim, pal.xxx

Can't you believe in God and be good?

Right now, I'm thinking WHY THE HECK CAN'T WE ALL BE IN Mr and Mrs Z's living room TALKING ABOUT THIS?

OH, bliss. THAT would be heavenly.....

The Bible as always simply states undeniable truth: the FOOL hath said in his heart, There is no God! Of course, if there's no God, then there can be no good! Mustang you hit it on the head. God wants His children to love him, so He gives us the choice to believe on Him or not. We can choose Him or not, but our choice stops there! The consequences are already in place. Praise God, as my brother Jack has beautifully reminded us, Jesus Christ took the full wrath of a thrice holy God on our sin, & now we can freely trust Him! Thank you Z for the opportunity to state these magnificent truths!! Gopd even uses the foolishness & wrath of puny humanists to gain praise!

Even Nietzsche was wise enough to only put the words "God is dead" in a madman's mouth.

Without God there is simply no point. We might as well just be beasts.

Perhaps that is what these groups want.

Buses here in the D.C. area have all manner of ads on them. As long as the ad doesn't advocate violence or show pornography, the transit authority accepts the ads.

But I imagine that certain messages aren't allowed, such as "Jesus is the Reason for the season." I've never seen that one!

I'm waiting to see "Islam is a religion of peace" during the next Ramadan.

I wish they had changed out God for Allah in a few ads.

A little guerrilla theater is always useful in shaking us out of our lethargy.

It makes me wonder why on earth these people feel the need to convince us to NOT believe in God??
What do they have to gain from it?

How did Humanists become Marxists?

Some of you see Marx everywhere.

The irony is that the Humanists, led by Erasmus, were fundamental in reviving mustangs beloved Roman classics, yet he calls them Marxists.

I can never find much consistency on the right.

Romans 3:10,There Is None Righteous, No, Not On.

Even our good works are as filthy rags.
Mankind is incapable of being 'good' and that is why G-d laid down His truth with which to guide our behavior. People do not want to acknowledge God because then they would be accountable for their actions.

---------------------------

Yeah, and that's when our lives become pornographic.

It leads down to sadomasochism, a pure will to power that's divorced from any from personhood, from relationships, from love. God is the only means to find that personhood and avoid the nihilistic pit.

Your last statement says it well..."imagine living without the promise, the solace, the strength." I made this very statement to a friend the other day. I said to her even if we got to the end and found out it was not truth, I would not want to have lived any other way. Having said that, I love the Scripture that says, "I know that my Redeemer lives." He has sustained my during times of loss and brought joy and peace in a world where people are desperately looking for it.

Ducky..Marxists?

MK: YOU SAID IT. This is ALL about reducing US to inconsequential, unholy people. It's part of the mediocre America thing, I believe (hey, maybe this IS Marxist, after all!?)...
Naked people with pumpkin heads on running a race in public, etc etc......we're no better than German Shepherds, right?
Nothing separates us then but thought......And, of course, REAL thought, real diversity, acceptance of ALL ideas is also a dying thing.

It cracks me up that the atheist feels the need to acknowledge the issue at all.

Those who protest the most are usually the ones fighting the pull of the Spirit the hardest, IMO.

Z said...

Brooke, I agree with you. "Thou dost protest too hard" applies here...The Spirit's working in overdrive and the earthly ones are resisting....I remember...I did, too.
And they think submitting to it is weakness. I know. I did, too.

I usually resolved myself to being "militantly agnostic" (I don't know, and you don't either) but my nominal Christianity is there.

There is a God. He left a note. Said He'll be back later.

Z said...

he's here, Beamish.
I hate to presume, but BOY, do I feel I've been where you are on this.
TRUST me, have I. And I could, again, but I strongly doubt it this time.

Agnostic is a real difficult place to be. MUCH more difficult than knowing.
And now I will leave the pulpit and apologize profusely for sounding like some nut. thanks for your patience.

Romans 1:18-21 "The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness; since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
For although they know God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thiking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened."

Simple and unfaithful generation...Wake up. As it was said in Action Worship Center of Laurel, MD today; "Fellow believers, It's CRUNCH TIME." Persecution is coming and our faithless generation isn't ready.
