"The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consiousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom.
No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People.
I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union." Abraham Lincoln
ALSO: Please check out this link on Squanto and read through it....and tell your children. As I read through it, I was thinking 'Man, this Indian was sent by God...why else would an Indian the Pilgrims happened to have run into speak ENGLISH? Been to ENGLAND? Back then?' And, lo and behold, I ran across this "Squanto was sent to live with the English settlers. His guidance proved so indispensable to them that Plymouth Governor William Bradford was moved to declare him a "spetiall instrument sent of God for [their] good."
We owe a lot to Squanto. We owe everything to God.
With affection and wishes for a fantastic day to you all....... from Mr. and Mrs. Z

Happy Thanksgiving to Z and all of her readers. Despite the peril that we face, we are still thankful. How special is that?
"In all things, give thanks."
A blessed Thanksgiving to you and your hubby, Z.
The most blessed and happiest of Thanksgivings! As this holiday season begins, I am happily reminded that I am thankful for so many wonderful things in my life - most of which I (too often) take for granted.
And so on this day, I want to thank you, Z, for being such an inspiration and blessing to so many lives, through your words and through your deeds. You always, so very brilliantly, manage to temper political discourse with humor and with hope - and I truly stand in awe of your efforts.
Happy Thanksgiving to you- and Mr. Z - :)
Happy Thanksgiving everyone. May you all have a wonderful day.
God bless America.

Thanks SO MUCH to you all...you're all very special and I'm proud to be part of the blogosphere with you.
Yes, LA....we Americans are optimists: Among the 'peril' as you say, and the bad news in Mumbai, for example, knowing this could come here ANY day, Thanksgiving feels like a time to regroup and count the blessings...to charge our batteries to KEEP GOING STRONG!!!
miradena, I'm very, very touched and honored. Thank you.

That's an awfully pretty room! Apparently, Robert Todd Lincoln had much better taste than either of his parents --- if the Lincoln home in Springfield, Illinois is an accurate example of the way the Lincolns lived.
Interesting (to me at least) that the atmosphere in this dining room in Vermont harks back to a much earlier period. It seems closer by far to the style favored by the Founders than anything considered fashionable in the mid-to-late nineteenth-century.
One of the many things for which I am always grateful is the work of historic preservationists who keep us in touch with the beauty and integrity of the best (and worst) in architecture and interior design from the past.

thanks, Pati!! I miss us both having time to email into the night...we have to get BACk to that..I miss you
FT...isn't it a very lovely room? And yes, MUCH better than the Lincoln homes I've seen the inside of full of gobbly gook, heavy turned woods and fussy fabrics.
I thought this was SO beautiful and soft. I love the color on the walls, that soft green. I'm glad you enjoyed seeing it. xx
