Census: You filling it out? And did you get the long form and the short form?

A friend just called with "your census should be in your mail box today...have fun!" She was being very sarcastic, of course. Besides the short form census she teased me about today, which she'd just received herself, this same friend also got a lengthy census questionnaire some weeks back of something like 300 questions which she will not be responding to although it says you can go to jail for abstaining.
That questionnaire had questions like "Do you own your home?" "Do you have a line of credit on your home?" My friend's had bad identity theft so there is no way she's giving all this information about lines of credit, etc. On that form were also questions like "What time do your children leave home?" and "When was your home built?" "How many times have you been married and when were you last divorced?" WHY? They want to know when you shut your lights off and how much water you use and I'm thinking maybe they could just get the neighborhood water usage directly from the Dept of Water and Power and leave our private usage to us?
I got a letter last week saying I'd receive a 2010 Census form in the mail in one week. Did you get that? It says "Without a complete, accurate census, your community may not receive its fair share." It says "fair share" is defined as "Government funds for highways, schools, health facilities, and many other programs you and your neighbors need." Don't tell US what we NEED, folks. And DEFINE "other programs"....I'm TIRED of giving money to ACORN, for example. "Fair share"....sounds so grabby ...like "I WANT MY FAIR SHARE!", doesn't it? Instead, how about having written "in order that we better know the needs of your community?" Wouldn't that have been a little more dignified?

Two Questions: Did any of you get that very long form? And, regarding the short form, ARE YOU GOING TO FILL IT OUT COMPLETELY? I thought that, in the past, you only had to answer how many lived there?

Why do they want to know if our home's paid for, or occupied "without payment of rent?" (like a shack-up, or what? :-) They want our PHONE NUMBER~!! Why? Isn't this supposed to be anonymous?? Oh. Wait, I'm literally reading mine as I type....it's not anonymous, they want our name....why? Isn't that NEW? When my friend called the census people and asked why she had to give her age and birth date, they said "Well, some people get confused and don't know how old they are." Is that just Obama voters? (cheap shot but who could refuse? :-) Who doesn't know his AGE? That's on this short form census you all should be getting, too!

If you're Black, you'll be so confused.......It says "What is Person 1's race?" White, Black, African Am., or Negro (are they KIDDING?, is this so nobody's feelings get hurt...isn't that all the same?), American Indian or Alaska Native (oh, they want your TRIBE name if you're either of the last two choices!!)

Please let me know what you're going to do. My friend said she's heard thousands aren't filling it out...I'd like to know what you think of that.............makes me nervous, but the government wanting this much information makes me even MORE nervous.

By the way, I'm REALLY ticked off. There isn't any ARMENIAN listed under Race! Ya, ya...I know we're WHITE, but geeeez.....it's not like we don't want OUR "FAIR SHARE", you know :-) Heck, if you're 'Other Pacific Islander', they give you a chance to fill in 'Fijian, Tongan, and so on'....you'd think we could all get that specific, right? To get our FAIR SHARE?

So, you going to fill it out? (by the way...regarding the image to the right...WHAT's in WHOSE HANDS? I'm getting nervous)

I just found the following info from THIS article: According to US CODE, "Whoever over 18 years of age that refuses or willfully neglects to answer any of the questions on the schedule submitted to him in connection with the census shall be fined not more than $5,000."

CHECK THIS OUT, from HERE: In 2000, another District Court agreed and found that it there is no constitutional limit on collecting additional data, when necessary for governance. That court also said responses to census questions are not a violation of a citizen's right to privacy or speech. Morales v. Daley, 116 F. Supp. 2d 801, 809 and 816. (S.D. Tex. 2000). These decisions are consistent with the Supreme Court's recent description of the census as the "linchpin of the federal statistical system ... collecting data on the characteristics of individuals, households, and housing units throughout the country." Dept. of Commerce v. U.S. House of Representatives, 525 U.S. 316, 341 (1999).

"For Governance"? Doesn't that make you feel better????
I think all this BS is where they got the word CONcensus :-)

Well, I can't afford such a fine, with the medical bills in this household. I'll decide what to do when the time comes.

**sigh**

My census form hasn't yet arrived but should this week.

Here's what they're gettimg from me:

The rest is all bs intended to gather info for the purposes of wealth redistribution. F%$& em! Leave those unanswered, I intend to.

Maybe if enough people refuse to answer the intrusive/busybody questions.

I haven't got mine yet, but then my mail hasn't run yet today.

That long form pisses me off! What business is it of theirs to know all of that?

Can I write in "None of your business?"

Or perhaps a N/A would be more diplomatic.

I can't afford such a fine, either.

As far as race? I agree with Human. It isn't incorrect, after all.

The law reads as follows:

(a) Whoever, being over eighteen years of age, refuses or willfully neglects, when requested by the Secretary, or by any other authorized officer or employee of the Department of Commerce or bureau or agency thereof acting under the instructions of the Secretary or authorized officer, to answer, to the best of his knowledge, any of the questions on any schedule submitted to him in connection with any census or survey provided for by subchapters I, II, IV, and V of chapter 5 of this title, applying to himself or to the family to which he belongs or is related, or to the farm or farms of which he or his family is the occupant, shall be fined not more than $100.
(b) Whoever, when answering questions described in subsection (a) of this section, and under the conditions or circumstances described in such subsection, willfully gives any answer that is false, shall be fined not more than $500.
(c) Notwithstanding any other provision of this title, no person shall be compelled to disclose information relative to his religious beliefs or to membership in a religious body.

I also think the government must prove that it is entitled to the information it solicits. The Ninth Amendment states that the "enumeration of certain rights" in the Bill of Rights "shall not be construed to deny or disparage other rights retained by the people."

Yes, the meaning of the Ninth Amendment is somewhat elucive, but Justice Goldberg in his Griswold concurrence interpret the Ninth Amendment as justification for broadly reading the Bill of Rights to protect privacy in ways not specifically provided in the first eight amendments.

I guess that's why we are plagued with lawyers.

Yeah, that's the same argument that made abortion a matter between a woman and her doctor.
You folk only like the "good" kind of privacy.

Still there is virtually nothing on the short form that isn't a matter of public record. You think your bank doesn't have all this and so much more on you and is sharing it with American corporations and a bunch of swell friendly hackers from Russia.

The right wing is a stitch.

I guess we should all just drop everything.

WRONG !!!!

Get with it right wingers. Bush can appropriate access to all domestic phone calls but you are b'ing and moaning about some nothing census form.

Stunning.

Brooke said...

Ducky, you had this argument years ago and still didn't get it.

Brooke said...

And why is it that you freak out over Bush supposedly doing it, but now that the Obama administration has told Americans that they should have no expectation of privacy with their cell phones you're silent?

Hell, you're not even mad that the BHO administration has thrown out a lawsuit against wiretapping.

The Constitution says the census is for enumeration.

Furthermore there is no mention of a fine on the form at all. If we're not informed of penalties on the form how can they expect people to know a US code?

Since when is Korean, Vietnamese, Pacific Islander, etc. a race?

Ducky, if you are consistent with the thinking of the government, who believe Korean is a race, why not Ukrainian? It seems legit to me.

Trust me Ducky, whoever looks at these things won't know the difference.

Brooke - "None of your business" is an answer isn't it?

How about, "This is Profiling".

How can they ask for it to be returned today, when it clearly states, "How many people were living or staying in this house, apartment,or mobile home, on April 1st, 2010?
This is from the Government, what can you expect?

Ducky said - "And when Chucklenuts commandeered a complete record of all your phone calls you bobos didn't say a word."

Wrong Ducky, that was only used for international electronic tracking through which certain words were the trigger for surveillance. Looking for terrorist activity.

It was Clinton who put into place the Echelon program for domestic wiretapping.

Brooke said...

Pris, I DID notice that they referred to a future date in the past tense.

Besides, how am I to know if I'll be living in this house, or at all on April 1st?

Another monumental show of incompetence. The damn form isn't even right.

Perhaps I should write something like that on the form.

How do they know that anyone lives at my address at all? The house next door has been empty for over a year.

Or does BHO call up banks that he now owns and ask who has what mortgage on what property?

Fascinating.

Of course they were using the records to investigate the Quakers and we were investigated at the Boston Catholic Worker House but those are two of the "bad" religions so they were probably up to something.

Let's face it, if one of you right wingers starts getting scared, which happens whenever a Muslim or a minority says boo, then you will sell out anyone.

Elmers Brother said...

I got the short form. I answered two questions...how many people live in your home and will it change after April 1.

That was it.

ON top of that the radio had some Census bureaucrat spouting off about having more power than the Patriot Act to enforce one completing the form. He also said if they had to send a worker to your home it would cost $57 and then said if everyone did that it would cost XXX number of billions of dollars. (can't remember the sum).

Could you get more pathetic than that.

Z, as I said to Ducky, if Japanese is a race, or Chinese, or Cuban, why not Armenian? None of these is race.

Race used to be defined as white, black, brown, yellow, and red.

All of it is hogwash. Since we have to be legal citizens to vote, and if we're American citizens, what difference does it make what race we are?

I called and asked the woman at the phone number on the form, this question: What relevance does whether I own a home with a mortgage, or own it free and clear, have to do with the census?

Her answer; So the government can judge neighborhood stability or how low income housing can affect it.

Me: What business does the government have in stabilizing neighborhoods, and how is whether I own a home or not an indicator of instability, stability, low income or high income?

Her; "I don't know".

Me; "What if I don't answer it?"

Her; "Someone will come out to your house, or call you".

Me; "I wouldn't answer anyone on the phone in any case, I wouldn't be able to check their ID".

Her; "Yes I understand".

Me; "What if I don't answer the person who comes to my home?"

Her; "I don't know."

That's it. She was very nice, and a bit flummoxed. When I said the phones must be ringing off the hooks, she said she had been reduced to tears at times. People are so upset, or angry.

I just said people don't appreciate this invasion of their privacy, and she said she didn't blame them.

I told her I wouldn't want to reduce her to tears, that she was just doing her job, and thanked her for her time.

As you can see, I found out zilch! Neighborhood stability indeed. Give me a break!

The Census has ALWAYS been intrusive.

Twenty years ago I owned home with a {illegal) efficiency apartment. I inherited it from the previous owner.

The unit had been a fifth bedroom in the house, but an outside entrance had been built, and the inside access had been sealed off.

It was a handy little place for helping to offset mortgage payments, etc. But during that census year -- 20 years ago -- the place just happened to be untenanted, and I decided to keep it that way, until "the storm" had passed.

Well, wouldn't you know? The census taker was a woman, and she had the GALL to walk around to the back of my house, and then knock on the door and asked me how much income I derived from my rental unit.

I told her NONE with perfect accuracy, and told her the way I used the home I'd bought, paid for and paid taxes on was NO ONE'S business but MINE, as long as I wasn't running a drug operation or storing dead bodies for personal amusement.

I said, "This is MY house, and far as I'm concerned, YOU are TRESPASSING on PRIVATE PROPERTY. I live here all by myself, and that's ALL I'm going to tell you."

She left, and wasn't heard from again.

There's nothing worse than a little who's been given a bit of authority. It gives them inflated ideas of their own importance, and often leads to abusive behavior.

The NEXT thing you know, they'll be wanting to come in and inspect our drawers and closets and count our flatware.

CONFISCATION "for the public good" won't be far behind, if we lay down and play dead for these bastards.

Did I ever tell you before that I HATE BUSYBODIES?

Please, isn't there some way we can just start all over in this country, separating ourselves from the madness, wiping the slate clean and refusing to participate in the revisionist destruction? Reinvigorate the Constitution as it was originally intended, etc. Someone back at FPM had a plan for settling some states with the purpose of seceding, said some were already acting on it. What happened to that plan? Maybe it's going to have to get SO bad we're forced to some such drastic solution to the problem. It's probably not quite bad enough to set a fire under us yet.
