The Night They Drove Ol'Dixie Down......reminiscent of TODAY?

Who knows why this song resonates with me? I'm the farthest from a "Southern Girl" as you can get when you consider my background, where I was born, lived, etc............but I love this song. I love The Band. Odd, 2 minutes after getting this post ready, I saw THIS ARTICLE about partisanship in Washington, DC today and yesterday, and it includes The Civil War era's partisanship, ...the article's worth a read. The country survived the Civil War. I wonder if we'll recognize America in five years? Would we care enough to fight? Would our kids fight? Boy, I sure didn't intend for this post to take this direction but I couldn't resist when I saw that Yahoo article.
By the way...I was just thinking; PARTISANSHIP is what we're warned against now...Obama says it's time to put that behind us and work (or VOTE his way if you're a politician and haven't even read the bills), right? But....wasn't partisanship about as bad as it can get against Bush? Why didn't the Left get tough on that then, stand on these sudden principles Obama's proclaiming? Oh, ya....it was partisanship that suited their purpose. That's right....never mind.

Z,
The term "Kindred Souls" comes to mind...
Thanks for the post and a flashback to my youth, well early adulthood...

We might have survived it but there are a lot of people still fighting it.

At this point they probably don't exactly know why.

Born Again..'kindred souls'...nice thought. People wanting their self-reliance back, their choices, their country of freedom and opportunity.

Ducky......who doesn't know 'exactly why!!!?'

I too love that song and am a fan of The Band and Levon Helm too. His talents are pretty amazing, as he played Loretta Lynn's Dad in "Coal Miner's Daughter". :-)

Nice post!

Z,
That was great.

Ducky, maybe they don't appreciate certain yankees like you calling them rednecks and mouth breathers.
So, exactly who is it that's still fighting it?

Or our President calling them "people who cling to their guns and bibles" as if they're beneath him. But, what else is new.

They're people who love their culture as much as you love your new england culture.

Maybe you're the one who should "get over it"!

Oh, RK...your new Adeline Rose is GORGEOUS! One of the prettiest little girl babies I've seen....
She was born only a very short time after I lost my Mr. Z., so that's probably why I hadn't been by to hear the good news.

I'm SO HAPPY for you and will go comment at your place now in case you're too busy to get back here!
Thanks SO much for linking those pix!

WHAT a pretty little girl!! May God bless her for many happy, healthy years and may America again be just the way WE found it when WE got here :-)

I think Ducky's refering to the wing of the Democratic Party that hasn't overcome its loss of the Civil War and relatively recent begrudging admission that it's safe to share water fountains with black people.

You know, the Robert Byrd, Jimmy Carter / Bill Clinton / Al Gore wing of Klansmen, Dixiecrats, segregationists and the fruitcakes of their loins.

Even Missouri's current Democrat governor is still wigged out by the concept of black children going to the same school as white children.

The left may one day drop its vestigial ignorance but we're not even 100 years out from when they were still rounding up Jews for gas chambers, so we've still got to ways to go until they "progress."

Why wait for them?

It's one thing to be partisan, but the class warfare tactic, belongs to the left. It's theirs and they can keep it.

As for dangerous talk I nominate Louis Farrakhan who said recently, " the white man set Obama up to be assassinated". That my friends is dangerous talk. That's not partisan, that's hate, and it doesn't bode well for the American people.

It has to stop, and he should have been called on it. Was he? Did the President disavow it? Or disavow him? Doesn't he belong in that crowded space under the bus?

I think he got some kind of award along with Jeremiah Wright, did he not?

So now, in America, the haters are recognized for what, their contributions to hate?

Partisanship is an acceptable form of adversarial opinions, but, hate is beyond acceptable.

Well, we've come a long way baby, but it's the wrong way. It's time to turn this ship around!

Z: Thank you for the very kind remarks. I certainly have a big interest in helping to make this country a nice place to live for the next generations.

Right Klik - Congratulations! What a beautiful little bundle of joy. And she already has a song just for her. Sweet Adeline. Perfect.

Z, Beamish & Pris: but it WON'T stop because PROMOTING class warfare and racism gets them votes and power! It's a tactic that works because there are still people who believe this country doesn't "owe" opportunity, it "owes" RESULTS. And not just results, but PAINLESS, FREE and FAST results!

P.S.
Saw The Band numerous times in the 70s, also at Fillmore West and Cow Palace. Where?? - yep, that's how old I am. Bill Graham old.

BZ, I know you're right. But, what they resort to isn't. We have to live with it I guess, but I think it's dangerous and can become volatile. That's what I worry about.

I suppose what I want, is to hold those responsible for this political climate we're in to be reckoned with.

Let's hope the ballot box will be enough.

Joan's was good, BB, but THE BAND just ROCKED with this song..Somehow,as good as her rendition was (and it WAS), I love the haunting quality of this one...You feel like Levon feels it ...

BZ..Bill Graham..there's a name from the past! How LUCKY you got to see them in person, I never did.

Heidianne and Pris, isn't Adeline WONDERFUL? What a beautiful mouth and such bright eyes!
Heidianne, you'll have to link to your new punkin' some time soon :-)

Beamish, you think America can EVER get back to an honest media, sounder fiscal policies, a respect for both sides, less indoctrination in schools, etc? I just don't see it happening...

It can happen. It has historically required a long bloody fight followed by a crushing defeat of one side, but yes it can happen.

Rome wasn't burned in a day.

(((Thought Criminal))) said...

Depends on the outcome of the next violent civil war, which depends on how bad the sides want one.

It always splits in thirds. A third will want the status quo, a third will want radical change, and a thrid will be happy as long as they can still play XBox.

Bloviating Zeppelin said...

Beamish: no. It was burned under the cover of darkness. From within. By duplicitous traitors.

But Rome burned for close to a month. Of course, Nero having firefighters put to death on the spot probably had something to do with that.
