"If President Obama wants to better understand why America's discomfort with end-of-life discussions threatens to derail his health-care reform, he might begin with his own Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). He will quickly discover how government bureaucrats are greasing the slippery slope that can start with cost containment but quickly become a systematic denial of care". .....then there's this: "I was not surprised to learn that the VA panel of experts that sought to update "Your Life, Your Choices" between 2007-2008 did not include any representatives of faith groups or disability rights advocates. And as you might guess, only one organization was listed in the new version as a resource on advance directives: the Hemlock Society (now euphemistically known as "Compassion and Choices")."
Well, Jiminy Cricket!...I guess Sarah Palin was right again, and with good reason to be worried....

Z, they play fast with words. He will not have a "death panel" but he will have something.
They should call it the "pro-choice panel" :(
I fear the VA....I've been out of the Army for nigh on....um...lemme think.....17 and a half years, and I still haven't registered with them for any so-called benefits.....I'll get a copy of Self-Surgery For Dummies down at Barnes & Noble first.
Ah yes, Z.
A death panel by any other name, is still a death panel.

SLM,
I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the VA. I got my college education, and my first two houses from the VA. My father-in-law, a WWII vet goes to them for his health care and receives pretty good care.
Having said that, if someone wants to read that I believe in government running anything, they would be wrong.
The military is an entity given to control. The problem with government is that it is a one size fits all system. Outside the military, which is monolithic, this is a problem.
Government, by it very nature, acts monolithically. Individuality cannot be part of the equation. Therefore, personal care is out of the question. Fit into the system or you cannot be helped.
If you are outside the system you will be shoved aside. Government, by its very nature is incapable of individuality. That's why it must be limited.
Obama says one thing here, one thing there, he's a lying SOB.

Oh, I went to college on the GI Bill, too, but I catch far too many horror stories about VA healthcare locally. Now, to their credit, there's an excellent veteran's retirement home around the corner from me...I still have yet to go the VA housing loan route. My current home is already paid for so I didn't have to tap into that resource yet.
I'm glad your dad is getting good care from his local branch.
The HEMLOCK society? Geesh! That inspires confidence. Not.
