Don't hire American kids....they're too expensive....says our colleges

She'd better not be from America!
It looks like some US colleges and universities have notices posted on their websites informing US companies that they're tax chumps if they hire students who are US citizens. Here's the exact quote in the information on their sites: 'In fact, a company may save money by hiring international students because the majority of them are exempt from Social Security (FICA) and Medicare tax requirements,' advises the taxpayer-supported University of Pittsburgh (pdf) as it makes the case against hiring its own US students. You'll find the same exact pitches made by the University of Delaware, the University of Cincinnati, Kansas State University, the University of Southern California, the University of Wisconsin, Iowa State University, and other public colleges and universities. It's amazing that the following private schools also carry this information....like John Hopkins University, Brown University, Rollins College and Loyola University Chicago." Little ROLLINS COLLEGE, too?
Just wondering what you think of this...................?
Thanks to Jeff for the tip.......z

That's f***ed up! Not only are they treating students as a commodity, they're treating their own students that way. They're pulling the rug right out from under them intentionally when the government really should be imposing some kind of tax or levy on businesses who hire foreign students or foreign employees. Being a conspiracy theorist at heart it makes me wonder if this is part of the bigger picture and plan. This is a classic example of why people vote democratic. Socialistic control measures (entitlement programs) take care of you in the end. Educate them, indoctrinate them, then make sure they're dependent on you. If I agreed with all that I'd have to say job well done.

I suppose since illegal alien students in California pay in-state tuition, while a student from another state does not have that advantage, we should not be surprised.

However more and more being an American, it seems, puts you in back of the bus.

Selling this work program as these colleges do, emphasizing the costs to an employer as being lower, it seems to me, discriminates against American students.

This is just another example of the idea of being a citizen of the world, not of their country, and basically screwing over Americans once again. Now it's our kids.

A nice class action suit claiming discrimination against a class of Americans would be helpful.

In America, Americans should always come first. But, we have to remember who runs our institutions.

For many of them America is unfair, and in the name of diversity, this fits into their thinking, that is if they can think at all. It won't occur to the decision makers that this is unfair.

They're patting themselves on the back, telling themselves how tolerant and magnanimous they are. After all, it makes them feel good, and isn't that what liberalism is all about?

The way things are going here though, thouands of graduates will be lucky to get any job no matter who they are. And, the international students will be happy to get the hell out of here.

And the beat goes on!

It's unpatriotic but the truth is: that's what you get when you overtax businesses. So the solution is to stop taxing businesses and everything will be good.

Or ask American workers to relocate to China or India with a salary above the local one.

Like some French company did asking their personnel if they wanted to move to Romania.

Just your glorious "free market" (LMAO) at work folks.

You asked for it, you got it. Don't whine.

I truly want to see some class action suit claiming discrimination because an employer hired the least expensive employee. Can't wait to hear what "Tough Tony" Scalia, "Slappy" Thomas and Roberts have to say about that.
You made the bed folks, now it's time to lie in it.

DaBlade...this whole country's skyrocketing out of control

Always; it's odd. I know so many doctors who had huge school loans and are rich within a few years, and I LIKE it that way. They deserve it. Somehow, everybody's painted to 'the poooor thing....BIG loans'...odd that the reality is often different. But, the leftwingers will always spin their way. to America's detriment.

Frog: good point.

Ducky. We don't expect you to understand that Americans should come first.
This is American colleges recommending NOT hiring Americans.
That you don't have a problem with that and blame free market (!) is what I expected. LMAO, too, trust me.

Off topic but funny:

When cryptic posters portraying President Obama as the Joker from "Batman" began popping up around Los Angeles and other cities, the question many asked was, Who is behind the image?

Was it an ultra-conservative grassroots group or a disgruntled street artist going against the grain?

Nope, it turns out, just a 20-year-old college student from Chicago.

Bored during his winter school break, Firas Alkhateeb, a senior history major at the University of Illinois, crafted the picture of Obama with the recognizable clown makeup using Adobe's Photoshop software...

"I abstained from voting in November," he wrote in an e-mail. "Living in Illinois, my vote means close to nothing as there was no chance Obama would not win the state." If he had to choose a politician to support, Alkhateeb said, it would be Ohio Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich.

Just another case for you of 'kill the messenger' but the messenger isn't who you thought it would be...right? THAT's funny, I'll give you that!

At least the leftwingers, responsible for really heinous and unseemly 'jokes and pictures' of Bush were revealed in their anger over anything aimed towards THE ONE, huh?!

"the name sounds Arab"? Oh, Ducky, you do reveal yourself!!!!

The Duck has been backing "affirmative action" hiring practices for foreigners since 1965. He sure as heck doesn't want US colleges to stop paying for that now. After all, foreign labor is and always will be cheaper than American labor. But that's no excuse for public money being spent on advertising that fact on behalf of foreign students. Not unless you're an "affirmative action" diehard like the duckmeister.

FrogBurger said...

"Just your glorious "free market" (LMAO) at work folks."

Another Ducky moronic idiocy. I had to combine those two words as you truly are an idiot.

It's because gov gets in the way with stupid taxes that this happens, fool.

It's not free market.

Your kind never ceases to amaze me.

I'd love for you to elaborate and prove me this is free market.

But you won't do that. Because your lazy brain never, never, never proves anything.

Ducky's here said...

z, in a free market why "should" anyone hire more expensive labor when other qualified labor is available.

This is the same thing the "free market" (LMAO) has been subjecting everyone to with illegal immigrant labor.

Why do you expect it to change. It's the capitalist way. Ethical arguments are utter nonsense when they come up against the Full Ayn Rand.

FrogBurger said...

That's the human way to think minimum effort or cost for maximum gain. I'm sure you do that at work. (Otherwise you'd be working your butt off instead of being on blogs.) So capitalism is in line with human nature.

The more frictions you introduce in the production and exchange of goods, like high taxes and regulations, the more you entice this kind of behavior.

Therefore it's not the free market, it's government.

Ducky's here said...

Come on froggy, why not move to a Libertarian paradise like Afghanistan or Somalia.

You can get some gun loon to arm you and you'll be all set.

Capitalism is more ethical than any other system in history.

Go work in France and you'll experience where there's more ethics in the work place and business relationships.

It's in the USA that I've seen more ethics and respect from corporations for their employees.

What you fail to grasp, ducky, is that the public universities have no business advertising the cheaper labor of foreigners. THAT is an "affirmative action" step too far. Let the business' go to the expense of learning about the ready availability of cheaper foreign labour themselves... THAT is a "free market". American universities and colleges have no business "affirmatively" pushing one degree'd individual from their institution OVER any other (foreign or domestic).

Ducky's here said...

Why not? Higher education has largely evolved into a business, Farmer.

Why wouldn't they do anything legal to maximize profits?

Or illegal as was the case with some of their recent student loan scams.

Were they 'private' enterprises, I'd agree with you, but given the extent of state and federal subsidies, they are NOT.

Why wouldn't they do anything legal to maximize profits?

Again, most are NOT private enterprises.

Or illegal as was the case with some of their recent student loan scams.

Indeed, most colleges and universities are public institutions or receive public subsidies. They have no business using public money to perform charity affirmative action work on behalf of foreigners. If they wish to perform pro-bono education work for the local buusiness community, let them register as churches and/or charities and cut themselves off from the public teat.

Wow! I just read that, thanks for posting it. As someone who hires graduate assistants to do research as part of my academic duties, I've hired both US citizens and international students. For me, it is MORE paperwork and MORE time to hire these graduate assistants, there is MUCH MORE FEDERAL BUREAUCRACY involved! And when companies hire the F1, J1 students, someone still has to do the paperwork--at the University level and it is always time consuming.

But getting back to the main point here, the idea behind that publication was DEFINITELY letting employers know that hiring internationals was cheaper than US students. And still, that sucks.

It's unprofessional of any College administrator to spit in the faces of any of their students.

The Illegals (mexicans) in my area all pay SS, income and medicare taxes under taxpayer ID's created via an HR managers wizardry; that's how its done here. You can work, but you're paying taxes on services you'll never be entitled to collect on. It should work the same way for foreign exchange students.

johnpatricio said...

While I do not like this at all, I have to say I think many of you anti-democrats are being very hypocritical. You can't sat "I love capitalism" and then get mad because companies want to hire cheaper labor. That is capitalism! You can't have it both ways. In fact I'll bet the colleges with those messages on their sites are receiving funding from some very large companies.

In order for capitalism to work there needs to be poor people. If there weren't poor people who would the rich people get to do their laundry, mow their lawns, serve them dinner in restaurants, pump their gas etc.. For capitalism to work, we can't all be rich.

This is Globalization in action.

And this isn't a Democrat or Republican thing - both are for globalization and therefore both are the enemies of the American working class.

Isolationism and protectionism are the only things that can keep the American standard of living at the level it was at 40-50 years ago.

It isn't too late to restore it. You just need to eliminate the Democratic and Republican parties, exterminate the bankers and outlaw the stock exchange, eliminate the Federal Reserve and destroy the fiat banking system. However, Americans don't have the political knowledge and therefore lack the political willpower to affect such a change and therefore are doomed to eventual 3rd world banana-republic status.

Well now, let's see:
1. Jobs off shored including tech support;
2. manufacturing goes overseas for cheap labor;
3. Multinationals hire lobbyists to get legislation favorable to their profit;
4. Special interests launch two wars of aggression, profits for certain companies and individuals soar;
5. technology decreases service sector jobs;
6. Innovations in creating "temporary hire" positions create segment of subcontractors who are expendable, don't have insurance, and can be laid off at any moment, if the contract is not renewed;
7. massive lay offs result;
8. Emergency measures by the Federal Reserve, the Treasury and the top execs of Leimon Bros destroy their old adversaries, and take home large bonuses, shop for smaller consumer banks at discount prices, and foreclose on homes at record rates, sometimes leaving them empty by neighborhoods;
9. Homeless middle class live in cars, no longer consumers;
10. retail market crashes;
11. commercial real estate market crashes;
12. Available cash is constricted;
13. Cash for clunkers eliminates used affordable vehicles from the market, driving up the price of inexpensive transportation;
14. Unemployment hits record numbers;
15. The medically uninsured skyrocket;
16. the medical business hits bottom as costs exceed accounts collected;
17. medical care becomes a liability, jobs lost as staff shrinks;
18. college loans become scarce;
19. college budgets run in the red, education quality and variety decrease;
20. student enrollment down;
21. colleges cut costs;
22. colleges get paid by foreign students, in cash'
23. colleges see survival on foreign students and promote their tuition potential in cash;
24. colleges promote foreign customers;
25. more jobs sucked down the rathole.

So, where is this going to end up, do you think? Ever live in a third world nation, before?
In the Philippines, people live in huts, with livestock under their home. Only thing is, we don't own the land, anymore. The bankers already stole the family farm, and sold it to Monsanto.

Oh, did I forget to mention the Agricultural sector?? That, and the land was sold to the largest manipulator of public health, in the world.

We are serfs on our own nation's soil. Was that the idea, all along, to build up that stolen land, and then steal it all, when it reaches it's full potential??

Is that what this was all about??

I'm not American, but I sure as hell would be pissed with the publicly-funded universities for pulling this kind of a stunt if I were one. The initial idea of having foreign students was really to have the labour go BACK where they came from, not sit pretty in America and ruin both sides of the world. Yet this brain drain is happening and hurting both America and the foreign countries, with encouragement from the respective governments. Pathetic!!!

Christopher Witmer said...

Somebody help me here -- HOW ON EARTH could it be LEGAL for a someone to be exempt from Social Security (FICA) and Medicare tax requirements simply because they are a foreigner? That does not make any sense to me at all.

I will say this, however: I'm in exactly the reverse position -- an American working overseas -- and one reason I got hired is because I set up a one-man company that lets my client avoid paying any taxes on me. They pay my (shell) company and my (shell) company pays me. Both my employer and I like this arrangement very much. It is the ONLY way I could afford to work for them, and it is probably the ONLY reason they hired me, and continue to work with me despite the economic downturn. We cut out the (tax) middle man! Also note, I have ZERO job security with this arrangement. My contract gets renewed every six months, but contract or no, they can let me go on a moment's notice since technically they would only be severing another company not a human being with all sorts of "rights" under the law. Ironically this seems to have led to me keeping this job longer than I might have otherwise, because if they let me go they are going to have to replace me with someone else who is more of a pain for them to have as an employee -- tax withholding requirements, all sorts of government-mandated commitments such as severance pay, etc. etc. So by accepting a job on terms that look, on paper, to be much more disadvantageous for me, I have actually managed to put myself in a more advantageous position. I also have a lot of satisfaction in knowing that the social security and Medicare vampires are not getting even a drop of blood from me.

Now in closing let me say one more thing -- I have been outside the USA for nearly 30 years but I do get the impression that a lot of Americans seem to think the world owes them a living, and (speaking from an employer's perspective) a lot of foreigners not only have a better attitude toward their work, they also come better educated to begin with. I realize that's a separate issue from what's being discussed here, but it's something to think about.

Based on my own experience as an American working in a foreign land, I think most people would be better off if the government was not involved in any welfare programs at all, did not tax people, and gave employers and employees complete freedom in negotiating the terms of employment with each other. The more personal freedom and responsibility people have, the better.

I wonder if you understand how the free market works.

All things being equal, you are an expendable part of the machine.

Think of the guys in congress, or the senate or the presidency as those who have been chosen to pull the levers.

At best, you are an important cog.

If you were more than that, you would not have bothered with commenting on this blog. It hurts. I'm the same way.

If you have made it this far, good.

What we all miss is that we have allowed our voices to be co-opted. We have allowed people to speak for us, whether left or right, that are just mouth pieces for those who want to continue how things have gone. In return, we mouth what they say, in some odd attempt to continue the structure that serves those that are controlling our voices.

Would you like to follow Ron Paul? Great, here you go. Keep talking. I like the man, but he is a useful tool for those that handle such things.

You only have one choice. It is a hard choice. Our training does not allow for us to really think it through.

Ignore them.

It really is a three piece plan.

Step 1:

Police your own community.

- Handle business at the local level. Know what is acceptable and unacceptable at the local level and handle it.

If someone commits a horrible crime, then they need to be dealt with locally.

If you have ever seen a ghetto, then you would know that the local crack head is to be pitied and helped. S/He has a mom and family. You help where you can.

If you haven't, then you need to think of those people as the town drunk or the town indigent. It's the same thing. If you have read this far, you have seen one of these before. How did you treat them? Keep it in mind, it could become important.

- Protect your own. These are the people that live next to you and the ones that you love as you go through this life.

I do hard work every day. You think I care about someone I talk to on the phone?

I don't know them, but I deal with them. At the same time, I have moved around the country and been wanting. I have gotten help from people that had no reason to help me out.

Pay it back or carry it forward. I have never gotten anything but a bill from the government. They do not care about you at all. You are a money generator. You are a little money battery for someone who couldn't give a rat's ass about you.

It will be a lot easier if you start calling yourself Double-A.

Try it. There is a lot more to this, you have time. Go to the closest mirror, look yourself dead in the eye and go "Hey, I know you, your double-A".

Lower your expectations and you should be set.

- Laugh at TV

You get fed everything that you are supposed to believe by television every day.

Have you ever thought about what you eat?

I like a good hot dog now and again but...

Have your ever heard what ends up in a hot dog?

Look, you are fed the worst things ever. Scrapple is better just because you know exactly what it is made of, as long as you get it from the Amish.

Basically, ignore news, follow your own gut and worry about everything at your level. If you see someone hurting your community, step up and handle it.

The U.S. government isn't coming to help. If you see the government and they say they are coming to help, laugh and then run for your life. They are coming to help someone's wallet and it isn't yours.

Those that have followed along, you most likely know this.

The question becomes "What am I going to do?" or "Who do I tell?"
It's time for you to start reading.

more.

and talking to people.

Keep it simple. There are people out there that at least have an idea. Most likely, they have never heard the other side of the story.

Treat them with kid gloves and bring them along.

We all know something is wrong and we are being used. The question becomes how do we correct it?

It starts with ignoring them and helping your community to chart its own course.

What you do after they show up to make you pay attention to them falls on you entirely.

I witnissed a bizarre conspiracy by a group of graduate students at the University of California to force California taxpayers to subsidize the graduate education of foreign students. I was a graduate student myself at the time, back in circa 1998. The scam was to make exempt even foreign born graduate students from tuition, as part of unionizing the graduate teaching assistants. The graduate students who organized this scam at my university appeared to me to be nearly all jewish. There were no other significant changes as a result of unionization. The only change: foreign students study for free now. On the California taxpayers dime. Crazy? Jews have gotten the goy cattle to act against their own interests time and again, in the name of altruistic ideals.
