Here's a stunning interpretation by ABC's John Parkinson:
The bill was perceived by Democrats as political maneuver to coax liberal lawmakers into supporting the bill or face the prospect of an onslaught of campaign advertisements this fall highlighting a lawmaker's vote to support sex-selection abortions.
Still, only 20 Democrats took the bait and broke from their party to vote with the majority of Republicans. Seven GOPers opposed the measure.
Really? But, perhaps, those Democrats just voted their conscience? Can that happen anymore?
And then Mr. Parkinson opines like this!!:
After the plight of blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng captured international headlines this month, Republicans had hoped to capitalize on the momentum of that awareness to ensure that sex-selection abortions are not legal in the United States.
SO...was your first thought when you heard about the Chinese dissident "China!.....sex-selection abortions!?" It wasn't mine because I figured the dissident was just fed up with everything about China...I hadn't learned WHY he was considered dissident. So, I guess this does make sense.
WOW....well, Mr. Parkinson's take is interesting.
WOW....well, Mr. Parkinson's take is interesting.
Do you think there should be a ban on sex-selection abortions? Most of you will tell me you'd like a ban on abortions, and the public is starting to feel that way, too, according to recent polls...........what do you think?
How much of your vote would depend on a candidate's view on abortion?

I may be only one out here on this limb, but I find aborting a baby because it's a girl no worse than aborting a baby because it's an inconvenience.
It's killing a baby; does the reason really matter?

When spelling and grammar are no longer prerequisites to get in to journalism school you didn't seriously expect logic to be included in the curriculum did you? The media, most of it, writes to support the agenda of their employers and they've been doing that since the days of Addison and Steele. The only reporter to honestly believe in truth, justice, and the American way was Clark Kent!
No time for the rest until I get home from work other than to say that gender based abortion is beyond despicable.
How much of your vote would depend on a candidate's view on abortion?
I don't base my vote entirely on one issue. I do, of course, look at a candidate's position on all issues.
One huge problem: often a candidate says on thing, then changes his position once in office.
For example, one reason that I voted for GWB in 2000 was his opposition to nation building. GWB's position on nation building certainly changed, huh?
I find sex-selection abortion despicable. But it isn't surprising that we have arrived to that "brave new world." As Lisa pointed out: aborting a baby because it's a girl no worse than aborting a baby because it's an inconvenience.
I'm sure that sex-selection abortion occurs with some frequency.
Utter nonsense. This is a stunt by Lila Rose, the female James o"Keefe.
If O'Keefe is the Godard of right wing film making then I guess Rose must be the Agnes Varda.
Her film was heavily edited as usual and at no time was there any advocacy of gender specific abortion.
Just another stunt by the fringe right. Doesn't take much to get you folks whipped up.
Its the real war on women
I have to admit I am conflicted by the abortion issue. I generally do not support it, but I do believe there are legitimate exceptions: to save the life of the mother, when physicians know the child is physically or mentally impaired, or if we are talking about Ducky. Selective breeding is called “eugenics.” This was the brainchild of Margaret Sanger, proving once more that the left isn’t known for having many good ideas.
It was a stupid law, but I understand why the GOP did it. You explained the political tactics.
Gone unmentioned by the press is why the Chinese dissident is a dissident: He and his wife are copious breeders by ChiCom standards. Part of his dissent is against China's mandatory abortions and the girl-killing sex selection that goes along with the one-child policy.
Another manufacturer issue from the loony right.
SF...I didn't realize that was part of what made him dissident. I'd better change my post. I wondered why that was said that way.
Rita...aborting any baby is despicable, but it's legal.
These people went into a Planned Parenthood and that was that.
This wasn't a 'play' someone wrote, they came in and got the information they needed to prove to the country what PP is up to.
THat's the point...the idea of sex selection is Hitlerian and the Left doesn't even see it.
She was fired immediately, by the way, so it's clear this happened and not much editing had gone on. What's it take to understand that?
Sam, I'm still laughing at your remark !: _
Off Topic, I heard John Edwards say "God isn't through with me yet..."
And I tend to agree, don't you?
"And I tend to agree, don't you?"
Yup...God's arranging for his next nice coiffure in a hot place.
Since sex can be determined around two months what effect would this asinine piece of fringe right agitprop have in any case?
Just another opportunity for the right to look like fools.
Do any of you really think this is a serious issue?
Imp, that's what I though. He's done so many awful things...I almost feel bad for the guy but his parting speech at the court house took that away. I felt badly he didn't mention his elderly parents who'd come every single day, too.
Ducky, you're entitled to come and disagree. And yes, most of us think it's a serious issue to be aborting babies anyway, but to start picking the sex is a slippery slope most good people would try to avoid.
Considering the polls against abortion at all in this country, you're sounding more like a fringe leftie than usual.

Just think of the millions of babies our society has deprived of life through abortions. It's hard to cope with the number of future Americans our nation lawfully allowed to be killed, isn't it? It's barbaric, it's evil. It's the greatest of sins and a national disgrace. And aborting babies for no other reason than they're girls is particularly heinous. We live in sick times.
It looks like John Edwards is now qualified for the 2016 democratic primary.
I remember in High School a friend of mine had 3 abortions at Planned Parenthood. At the time I just supported her choice even though it bothered me an couldn't imagine going through it. I didn't have too much of an opinion on it then.
She has 3 children now. But back to that I couldn't believe how crowded the place was and nobody was there for breast screening I can assure you that. It was like manufactured abortions.
I think abortion makes it too easy to not have to take responsibility for both men and women. Although it's always harder on the woman as usual.
"As Lisa pointed out: aborting a baby because it's a girl no worse than aborting a baby because it's an inconvenience."
AOW that was Rita who said that but thanks for the shout out, lol!!!
Getting back to Chen I never quite figured out since he's blind how he escaped from where he was being held and escaped to an embassy. That's pretty damn good imo, real Jack Bauer stuff!
I am really tired of this game of euphemisms being played. Nobody has the ultimate right of choice with their bodies.
Nobody.
If a woman does crack, she is jailed. If a woman takes prescription drugs illegally, she is breaking the law. If a woman tries to commit suicide, she will be institutionalized, and there is not a law against suicide.
The so-called right of choice has nothing to do with women's health issues. It has everything to do with aborting the life of a human being. Argue about what is human and when, but you cannot get past the fact that women want the right to kill their young.
Sam said, "or if we are talking about Ducky"
Ahh! Duck is our case for retroactive abortions, now.
AOW - Thanks for the link.
This gives the lie that pro-choicers would love to have some common ground with the pro-lifers. We hear this alot from the choice crowd, we'll work with you if we can to reduce abortions but then modest bills like this come along that they shoot down time and again.
Sam said...
"I do believe there are legitimate exceptions: to save the life of the mother, when physicians know the child is physically or mentally impaired".
I agree with Sam and I'd add in cases of rape or incest.
I'm against gender choice abortion. However a woman who has that reason, doesn't have to say that is the reason, does she?
As distasteful as this subject is, my vote would not be swayed by it. The country will not rise or fall based on this issue unless abortion was mandated by the government, as it is in China.
A life is a life or it's not.
If it's sex, circumstances of conception, or quality of life (for the child or it's parents) that determines whether the child is allowed to live, God help us all.
When I first saw the video of the Planned Parenthood counselor telling what she thought was a potential client that she could hold off on aborting until the fetus is developed enough to determine its gender, if she wanted only a girl, I thought, "there goes their argument that the abortions are made available to poor, suffering women who are in ill health, or just financially unable to support a child."
If a woman is in ill health, or poor, wouldn't it be just as difficult to keep a little girl, as it would be if it is a little boy? Of course, if she is getting the abortion just because it's free, and the child is an inconvenience....
What I'm wondering is where are all the indignant women's rights organizations that have been ranting and raving for years about equal treatment of/for women?
Hypocrites, all.
How anyone could vote against the banning of genocide is beyond my comprehension, but I guess the lefties consider it just another feather in the hat of their heroine, Margaret Sanger.
I wonder when they will declare a national holiday for her?
Ducky asked, “Do any of you really think this is a serious issue?” It is perfectly understandable to me how someone as immoral as Ducky would support eugenics. This is what we should expect from communist ideology, which is by definition godless and historically, a blight upon human kind.
Uh no mustang. Do you real think women are obtaining sex selective abortions in the U.S?
It ain't India, bubba.
Or is it more likely the latest Breitbart style agitprop to keep the peeps minds of the reaming Wall St. is giving them?
Just put an edited video that establishes nothing on O'Reilly and you stooges will believe it.
When did you give up on your own common sense?
There have been no credible studies or proof that this is a problem in the USA. It's another attempt by the GOP to outrage the loons who don't realize they are doing NOTHING about the real issues such as the economy and jobs. The offer no ideas and filibuster Obama's bills while average Americans suffer. Do you realize how you are being manipulated?
Lib-Mann: "...they are doing NOTHING about the real issues such as the economy and jobs.
The figures released recently claim to show the the stimulus package created 2.2 million jobs. At the 800 billion or so spent that works out to $317,000 spent per job. At those prices the best damn thing the government can do for the economy IS nothing.
From a friend of mine...
"I am a retired Army paratrooper and Ranger with seven combat deployments from Panama 1989 to Douchebagistan 2007 and for the first time in my life, I am afraid for my country.
I swore an oath in 1986, the same oath millions of Americans have sworn to enter service in our armed forces, to protect the constitution of the United States of America from all enemies foreign and domestic.
It is obvious to me that this collective glob of slime in charge of our nation’s political leadership is hoping an armed confrontation will occur so they can smite them down with the power of federal law enforcement and use a complicit media to garner sympathy and support.
My larger fear is what will happen in November should obama and his ilk steal the election…..this is a powder keg waiting for a spark. Arm yourself with knowledge and gird yourself with faith. God Bless America."
" It's another attempt by the GOP to outrage the loons who don't realize they are doing NOTHING about the real issues such as the economy and jobs. The offer no ideas and filibuster Obama's bills while average Americans suffer. Do you realize how you are being manipulated?"
I guess Liberal Mann (?) is practicing his 'talking points,' just like the rest of the poor, deluded, followers of all things Obama.
Yesterday, we got a real taste of what this election season is going to be like, when a volunteer of Oraganize for America showed up at our house. Funny, but she said practically the same thing, verbatim. She lost her temper, too, and asked if we really thought that he'd even had enough time to fix anything, considering the "do nothing Congress who fights him on everything, but don't offer any solutions to anything."
My husband, who is retired military, said that he'd had the Congress and the Senate for the first two years, and the only thing he accomplished was to get a bill passed that does nothing but "screws me, and the rest of the people like me."
When she asked, again, if we didn't think that he should be allowed more time, my husband answered, emphatically, "No! He has had too much time, already."
You would have thought that he had slapped her! Her face turned beet red in anger, and she said, "WHAT??? YOU THINK HE'S HAD TOO MUCH TIME??"
At this turn of events, my husband said that he was finished with the discussion, and told her to have a nice day.
She practically shouted "OKAY" and started scribbling, madly, on something she was holding in her hand. She did that for a good two minutes, before walking off the porch, where she scribbled for another minute or so. No doubt, we're on some kind of list, now.
She started out as sweet as pie, in a 'come let us reason together' mode, until the discussion wasn't going her way, and then it was like Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, she changed so quickly.
What I've talked about here, wasn't the whole discussion, of course, but suffice it to say that it went downhill, very rapidly.
I don't understand why they think that we're weak minded enough to cross over to their (dark) side, and there is absolutely no reasoning with those people in getting them to see the light. :)
viburnum, what would you have them do?
Keynesian stimulus?
We know you don't want that.
Deregulation and supply side, tinkle down?
Well that got us into this miss.
Nasty little dilemma isn't it?
Of course we can all just kick back and laugh at impertinent. At least we'd feel a little better.
Ducky and Lib..."common sense" and "Manipulation" Really?
Wake up and see what's happening to you. Stop believing that anything the Right presents can't be true; it's dangerous to the country and makes you look completely silly, doesn't it.
Yes, half of America isn't QUITE as dumb as you'd like to think. Or Obama would like to think.
Wall St is mostly full of Democrats, believe it or not .
Planned Parenthood is a place where (SURPRISE!) when video cameras are hidden, they show their true colors. Must be only the one-off time that they promised underage girls abortions or sex-selection, huh? They just happened to catch them on that day? :-) How naive can you BE to believe that?
we'll keep informing and you keep hammering. Scary, really.
Our wonderful buddy and ex-commenter FrogBurger emailed me this today in response to my post and the comments:
"I'm surprised that nobody is asking the question as to what if the woman had showed up and said she had sex with a non white person and would like to abort b/c of the color of the baby.
I'd like to bring up this argument to people who think aborting because the baby is not of your liking is ok."
I'll just add that, if Margaret Sanger had her way, they'd probably be giving specials at PP for racists who felt a half-black child should die in the womb.
ED: That is how I feel about life. If it's rape, it's not the unborn child's fault and, if a child is God's will, a rape doesn't negate the life.
Bob "The so-called right of choice has nothing to do with women's health issues. It has everything to do with aborting the life of a human being. Argue about what is human and when, but you cannot get past the fact that women want the right to kill their young."
Well said, my friend,
Lisa..."It looks like John Edwards is now qualified for the 2016 democratic primary."
I laughed out LOUD; you come up with THE best stuff! I love that!
Did you hear his awful speech after his 'acquittal'? it's ALL ABOUT HIM, isn't it. Funny, he cried, but the Left didn't insult him like they do Boehner when he goes emotional (which is actually 'drunk' by the way, considering how I've been around him at a cocktail party and saw for myself).
Of course, I think the Left just wants their ex-hero to 'go away'...but I don't think he's out of politics: Dems LOVE a guy like this with little character. It's so 'cool' to not have restrictions on yourself..."if it feels good, DO it" Yikes.
JAN..excellent point about Women's Organizations. Gee, she wanted to abort because it's a GIRL. And they're probably believing this was a one-off, too, imagine?
AOW! My gosh, that's exactly what FrogBurger suggested...the next thing would be race-based abortions...my GOD>
And the media's barely mentioned this was part of the bill the Republicans wanted...to stop sex selection or race-based selection.
And the media does the Lefties' bidding ...again.
by the way, I don't take ANONYMOUS comments anymore and it bugged me so badly at work to have a minute to check the blog and not be able to post! There I am, blog owner and I CAN'T COMMENT!? HA!!
My husband, who is retired military, said that he'd had the Congress and the Senate for the first two years, and the only thing he accomplished was to get a bill passed that does nothing but "screws me, and the rest of the people like me."
---------
What bill would that be, Jan? Who are the people like me?
Why is your husband being retired military relevant?
Z..In my previous comment about the abortion clinic, oops, I meant Planned Parenthood, I see now that I typed 'girl' when I meant 'boy'which may have been a bit confusing, so my apology for not proof reading my own comments.
I do reaize that the whole idea for the undercover video was to show that one can pick and choose which gender to abort there, and they will tell you, exactly, how to do it.
And on that note, here's an interesting quote:
"...I've got two daughters. 9 years old and 6 years old. I am going to teach them first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby."
~Barack Obama~
Yes, I remember that quote. "punished", imagine?
"Why is your husband being retired military relevant?"
Not relevant to you, Ducky, that's for sure.
This concerns nothing that you would know anything about, unless you have served in the military, but changes have taken place, already, in his health coverage.
We've just gone through an ordeal, recently, so don't even try to tell me that I don't know what I'm talking about.
However, I'm sure that the commenters on here who HAVE served their country know EXACTLY what I'm talking about.
I find your tone rather denigrating, too...to say the least.
Do you have something against serving in the military, too?
"She started out as sweet as pie, in a 'come let us reason together' mode, until the discussion wasn't going her way, and then it was like Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, she changed so quickly."
Wow...talk about coincidences...I had the same damn thing happen to me today. A ring on the doorbell and a sweet looking Asian girl with a clipboard.
As soon as she started talking about voting for Obummer....my dog ( Doberman ) went crazy and started growling, barking and I think scared the crap out of her.
My dog...Dodge....has been paying attention to my heated political discussions with my wife I think.
He's learned well....my side of the picture. I bought him a new treat today...a PORK CHOP to pay homage to the "One"!
"At least we'd feel a little better."
I always feel better when I sit on my throne and take a ducky dump. The worst POS in my towns sewer system. I'm sure I'll be fined.
"It has everything to do with aborting the life of a human being. "
Not according to the demrats and the Sanger-ists. Of course I'd make an exception for duckcrap. Useless garbage...snotty too....must go to the "de baño" when it's around.
"He's learned well....my side of the picture."
Imp.. I'm smiling at the mental picture! :)
You know they do say that a dog is a good judge of character?
It must be true!
"Imp.. I'm smiling at the mental picture! :).."
That's funny as hell Jan. Actually my dog does smile at times...but it's all one huge mouth full of teeth. Get the picture?
She mistook his grin....Nah....my dog was really pissed. He's smarter than any phony lib and doesn't suffer fools real well. Dogs rely on instincts not bullshit from liberals....they can smell it.
I'd like him to meet ducky or libturd.
My next dog will be named Alan west.
Imp! Have you seen that dog that snarls every time his owners mention OBAMA? SO good!! Sounds like DODGE (i love that name)
I FOUND IT!:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Xv6Xq9N1HE
So good! Enjoy!
Jan, it appears Ducky didn't understand that you meant health care..
I just emailed a little with Ticker and you can't BELIEVE what he's gone through. I can't speak for him because it was in private emails but I AM FURIOUS that with the problems he's got, he doesn't have what a normal person CAN get...not with VA insurance.
And, there is no doubt in my mind that we're getting ready for rationing when I hear his experiences at the VA>
Funny, because, today, I emailed him asking him to elaborate on an email about the VA system he'd written to me ...for a post for geeeZ but he's not feeling up to it and I'd never want him to feel lousy for this blog! (the libs feel lousy enough :-)
Ducky: "viburnum, what would you have them do?"
As I said. Nothing. The only role government should play in the realm of economics is law enforcement. Let them keep the game honest and otherwise get the hell out of the way.
Ducky, sorry..deleted. Come back when you can sound a tad less pompous and when you've learned that all of my commenters are at least as smart as you are and having different opinions is American.
thanks.
call it censoring, I like that.
then see what your side's censoring tomorrow in my Saturday post...something any true American would be ashamed of.
To: Ducky
From: Jan's husband, Lucky:
Sir, (and I use that term, loosely) the expression 'others like me' refers to men and women in uniform, active, and retired, who are giving, and have given so much to this great nation of ours.
We are the reason that people like you have the ability to motor-mouth, over the Internet, insulting all that is good and moral.
To quote something you've probably heard often: "Freedom is not free. Some gave much, some gave all" and I would gladly do my part, again, even after encountering individuals like you.
I am proud to be an American, and if need be, would gladly, and proudly, give my life for her.
In my humble opinion, no one should be President of the United States who has not served in any branch of the U.S. Military.
Military and civilian lifestyles are as different as night and day. Those who serve, do so by their own choice, and the greatest majority do so with great honor and dignity.
I pose only one question to you, Sir: Do you love your country enough to die for it? If not, you need to keep your overbearing, obnoxious comments to yourself.
Isn't this an irony? I fought for your right to voice your opinions, no matter how assinine they are.
And I would do it, again.
Go figure.
Lucky and Jan, thank you so much.
And God bless our military who care that much for this greatest country on God's green earth.
Thank you for your service and your love of country, Lucky.
We need a president who isn't ashamed of our exceptionalism...but, first, we need to get our exceptionalism BACK :-) And we will.
Z,
My gosh, that's exactly what FrogBurger suggested...the next thing would be race-based abortions...
Yep.
What's coming next? Mandating abortions for certain races or ethnicities?
I'm glad that I'm as old I am. The world has gone ABSOLUTELY INSANE!
For Jan from another Vet
"For Mr. Obama to make up for what he has already done to this country he would have to spend the rest of his life on his knees begging forgiveness.
Mr. Obama it seems is much more adept at bowing than kneeling, I cannot help but feel that as he was bowing to our enemies he was simultaneously inviting the citizens of the United States of America to kiss his Democratic Posterior.
On Jan 20 1981 I and my classmates at Camp MacKall on Ft. Bragg were awakened around 1am to the loudspeakers in the camp announcing that Ronald Regan had officially taken over the position of Commander in Chief of the Armed forces of the United States.
In freezing temperatures every one of us got out of his sleeping bag and left our tar-paper shacks and were yelling and screaming, beating on trash cans and their lids in joy and relief.
Relief from being under the command of a man we could not respect, and finally being under the command of a man we could.
They played the Ballad of the Green Beret, we sang, they played the national anthem and every one of us in our underwear in the freezing cold stood at attention saluting and singing at the top of our lungs.
I wish I could be with the guys who risk their lives on a daily basis in Afghanistan or Iraq or anywhere they may be under fire when they get the news that Obama is no longer their CnC. That kind of joy can only be experienced, it cannot be conveyed.
And if these guys aren't allowed to piss on a dead terrorist....maybe they can legally do it to a departed traitor's image?
Imp, what an amazing story.
Maybe they'll be doing that for Romney, but I doubt they would even if he DID pull this off.
Still, maybe it could be a WE'RE RID OF OBAMA party in the cold!?
"On Jan 20 1981 I and my classmates at Camp MacKall on Ft. Bragg were awakened around 1am to the loudspeakers in the camp announcing that Ronald Regan had officially taken over the position of Commander in Chief of the Armed forces of the United States."
Thanks, Imp, for sharing this great memory of that day!
Lucky said to tell you that he had the honor of serving on President Reagan's Military Inaugural Committee, and that it was one of the proudest moments of his career...and to thank you for your service to our country.
Maybe, after the next election, we will again be able to rejoice in heartfelt gratitude for the change!
Maybe then, we will get back the exceptionalism that our Z so often speaks of, and that we all long for...
xoxo
For Jan and Lucky
awesome
The first thing I said to my daughters and wife after watching news together about this was that (my view) gender selection abortion is wrong. However, the video purposely gives the impression that the issue is anti-woman. It could have had a mom saying I want a girl, not a boy. Or, a woman saying, my husband wants a boy not a girl. Whatever, I didn't like the "convenient" girl issue, a la war on women. Abortion and sex slection abortion is a legit argument. If I were a woman I would be pissed off! Women are not pawns.
On what Ducky asked Jan and Lucky, it was relatively tame. While serving gives a unique (wonderful and or horrible) experience, it certainly does not result in a one view experience. Some vets are Progressives, some are far right, some are moderate.
Most of us are suffering. Decrsed income, increased health care cost, increased gas prices, increased food prices, decreased or non existant retirements, etc.
It easy for me to stay focused. My finances suck and neither party seens to give shit. They are both in the tank.
I was under the impression both parties wanted to create jobs! If so, they would address capital requirements, restructuring of banks, adressinmg trade imbalances, simplifying the tax code?! These things would influence the flow of capital. Where are you Repubs and Dems?
Lisa..how sweet of you!
Thanks!
xoxo
"On what Ducky asked Jan and Lucky, it was relatively tame. While serving gives a unique (wonderful and or horrible) experience, it certainly does not result in a one view experience. Some vets are Progressives, some are far right, some are moderate."
Well, KP, neither he, nor I would say that his experience was wonderful, having served two terms in Viet Nam..but the point is that he served proudly, and with honor.
It's just too bad that too many of our politicians aren't serving the citizens of the country in the same way.
Not to mention the many who no longer even have an iota of respect for the country, nor its citizens.
No matter how diverse the points of view, even with all its faults, America is still the greatest nation in the world, and it's time we all started acting like it, again.
Thanks Jan and Lucky, I agree with you.
I hope every time the idiot in chief or any of his leftist lapdogs utters something about the Conservatives war-on-women, we can ask them if they'll support the banning of abortions because the sex is female.
The public can then decide who exactly is conducting the war on women.
