Z, that is a truly magnificent cartoon. I wish everyone thought that way.

There are many who do not understand what makes a true hero. They worship shallow celebrities and leaders that lean left and spew poppycock.

We have a generation that does not really know the men and women of grit, integrity, and honor who gave themselves in sweat and blood to become pillars for the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Great example of what children, and many adults perspective are on who the heroes are today.

Many people just think of memorial day as a day to get cheap furniture.

Thank you for posting that.

The real tragedy is that we only seem to be able to honor the dead heroes in this country on a few special days every year, when there are literally millions of live ones currently in and out of uniform serving and standing with and mingling with us each and every day.

Thank you, all who serve this great nation.

Nice one. On Memorial Day I say thank you to America for WW2. I have yet to go to Normandy beaches to honor the soldiers who fought.

Well said Z. That is so tragically lacking in this day and age.

I can add nothing. May I use this tomorrow?

Memorial day..bluepitbull's right; cheap furniture or cheap linen or pianos. It has to stop. We have to remember.
I'm glad all of you get it, and I'm so not surprised!

MAYBE A GOOD IDEA IS TO TRY TO GRAB A TEENAGER THIS WEEKEND AND TALK TO THEM ABOUT MEMORIAL DAY; MAYBE SOMETHING WILL SINK IN!!?

Jungle Mom, of course you can....

I have a cartoon for every day this weekend. Please come back and see them, they get better and better....I was so pleased to find them and share them with you. I had really serious Memorial Day posts in my head, then I thought these were just right.

I'm looking forward to the Memorial Day posts by bloggers; I know they'll be magnificent!

I don't think the caption on the cartoon is up to date. It needs a government endorsed, politically correct spin. Like "Son, now here is a returned right wing extremist. This is were our government likes them so they can't do any more harm to our country."

I have to agree with the prior posters in that educating the young about what our country is, and who our heroes really are, is not going to come from schools, politicians or the media, but from ordinary, appreciative citizens.

For crying out loud! Now that i think about it, our schools are teaching kids that our founding fathers just aren't heroes, they are, in fact, criminals! Land owners! Slave owners! Aristocrats! Capitalists! Individualists! And worst of all - rich!!!!

And now that I think of it a little more, nonetheless, many of them lost their lives, sons, families, businesses, and worldly possessions in the Revolutionary war. Of course, they are still criminals. I almost lost my government endorsed perspective. Forgive me.

Due to the vast amount of pork steaks that will be barbecued this weekend, Muslims in the Midwestern United States are advised to cover their windows and doors with plastic sheeting until the particulate haram matter clouds pass.

Happy Memorial Day, America.

Z you're making a great point. I will talk to my Little Brother to tell him how thankful I am America saved our butts in WW2. Especially right now since they're working on a school project where they're learning how bad the white people were when they killed all the native Americans.

Hey Beamish -
You have got to be kidding. Due to the high amount of pork traditionally BBQ'd on Memorial Day weekend, the ACLU will be filing a lawsuit to outlaw the "outside" cooking of any pork products now and forever (inside cooking of pork will be outlawed down the road). Not only is it "environmentally unfriendly" it is offensive to muslims. And we already know, if something is offensive to any minority group, it may not be undertaken by the majority. After all, our study of revisionist American history informs us that the minority rules.

My beloved Grandfather is part of the greatest generation. Fought in the Navy during WWII in battles we read about in history books. Battles like Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Leyte Gulf. He's a treasure.

They do make them like that still. I served with many of them.

I'm grateful America still produces men like that.

I was talking about my Little Brother (Big Brothers Big Sisters) in the US

Elbro, I'm glad to know there still are guys like that. But, I should know better when I read so many patriotic bloggers..they and at least SOME of their kids, MUST still love America, right!?

Frogburger...I hate to say I'm RELIEVED because it's bad ANYWHERE, but I am relieved..merci!

Z, is Memorial Day a good time to go shopping for your new "Obama-mobile" from the "new and improved" GM — Government Motors? Who would have ever thought it would come to this in what was once the freest country ever conceived in the history of the planet?

My Papaw served in the Navy in WWII, as well. When we'd ask him about it, he'd diminish his contribution. He didn't really want to talk about it much. Not because it was extremely traumatic (although he did see some rough stuff), but because he didn't consider himself a hero.

That was one thing we always disagreed on.

Every year I'd call him on Memorial Day and thank him. I could hear him tear up on the other end. This year I'll call my sweet Mamaw and thank her on his behalf.

We hear about sports figures being called heroes, or anyone who goes the extra mile in his/her profession or activity.

But of course, that diminishes the meaning of the word. These who lie in graves because of honorably serving their country in battle are the ones who deserve the title of hero.

Our young have not been well served in learning what a real hero is, and to me, it's someone who will lay down his life for something greater than himself. There is no greater courage.

These American young men and women, deserve this day to be set aside to honor them.

It is traditionally May 30, and should not have been made the third day of a three day weekend.

It shouldn't have been made a day of convenience, it is a day which should stand alone.

That cartoon is right on the money -- it's the realignment of perspective everyone could use these days

Anonymous said...

@Khaki Elephant, "realignment of perspective" Exactly right.

Memorial Day and Veterans Day are among the very few holidays that have any meaning left for me. They aren't "Hallmark Holidays." I liked your post very much.

Waylon, we're not going to go down without kicking, TRUST me.
But, it's interesting to hear a Canadian's point of view...you see it happening and our Left doesn't.
I have a relative in your country who very happily voted for THE ONE; I wish our media was more honest, I truly believe this relative never would have had he/she known.

Jen..thank Mamaw for US, too, honey! Good job....he most certainly WAS a hero.

Khaki, Kris, Hermit; A thanks to you all for coming by, too....I'm glad you appreciated this as much as I do. I'm so not surprised. ...

Yeah, I also have someone in the family who voted for BO as well. Went across the border to do that. Bo may be even more popular in some areas of Canada than he is in your own country. There are some Canadians who strongly disagree, maybe as much or more than some Americans.

Waylon..Canada and Britain are both coming around to the conservative way of looking at THE ONE.
it's interesting to read their media.
Wish WE had a free media. Imagine an American saying that?
Obama's got a real hold on our media now..even hired 3 bigwig producers from one of the networks and CNN....we will hear what HE wants us to hear in the manner by which HE wants it heard.

He's looking very nervous lately, very dour and serious.......maybe he's got over the "aren't I SWELL, they LOVE ME" and doesn't care if we like his smile anymore because he knows he's in charge...no matter what. :-(

Z,
I love that graphic!

I know that many love to watch American Idol. For me, however, I believe that the show is sucking out the brains of the teen fans. Often when my students arrive to class, the show is all they can talk about.

Fantasy and entertainment are fine. But real issues matter more for our future.

ElBro, what ship was your Grandfather on? Mine was on the U.S.S. Salt Lake City.

The USS Springfield and the USS Thorn.

Both of those cartoons were brilliant. I'd like to leaflet NYC and San Francisco with them... maybe two or three souls would be turned away from their headlong slide into nihilistic frivolity. Also, great point from FJ re the millions of heroic vets who go unhonored day in, day out. American Idols indeed, minus the frills, hoopla and glitter.

Some soldiers have a wicked sense of humor! What do you think?Well...I don't think Boyd intentionally went out to fight the Taliban in pink boxers that says "I heart NY" for the sake of unconventional warfare. But it is a great photo and I'll give the NYTimes the benefit of the doubt for its motives on publishing it on the frontpage. I don't think anyone can take the photo in any other way, than as a positive portrayal of the quality of those who serve in our military.

Jen,

That's impressive. The USS Salt Lake City participated in many important Pacific theater campaigns in World War II, from Guadalcanal to Iwo Jima.

You grandfather probably had quite a few stories to tell. His ship was one of the most active (and decorated) battle cruisers in World War II.
