Sunday Faith Blog....In Honor of FLAG DAY

"Make me to know what is acceptable in Thy sight, and therein to delight, open the eyes of my understanding, and help me thoroughly to examine myself concerning my knowledge, faith, and repentance, increase my faith, and direct me to the true object Jesus Christ the Way, the Truth, and the Life..."(By George Washington...from a 24 page authentic handwritten manuscript book dated April 21-23, 1752)

The Betsy Ross House is generally recognized as the place where Betsy Ross lived when she may have made the first American Flag. Several of her surviving family members, including daughters, grandchildren and a niece, said that this was the site of the legendary event......................

The Birth of Old Glory
, by Edward Percy Moran, depicting the presentation by Betsy Ross of the first American flag to George Washington

Say a prayer this Sunday for our great country and our flag...LONG MAY SHE WAVE, and may she wave over LIBERTY......Have a wonderful Day! ....the Z's

O! say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming.
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming.
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O! say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.'
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave![

You're a grand old flag
You're a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave
You're the emblem of
The land I love
The land of the free and the brave,

Every heart beats true
'neath the Red White and Blue
Where there's never a boast or brag
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
Keep your eye on the grand old flag

The poet was no friend to my people, but , in keeping with the topic:

Barbara Frietchie

UP from the meadows rich with corn,
Clear in the cool September morn,

The clustered spires of Frederick stand
Green-walled by the hills of Maryland.

Round about them orchards sweep, 5
Apple and peach tree fruited deep,

Fair as a garden of the Lord
To the eyes of the famished rebel horde,

On that pleasant morn of the early fall
When Lee marched over the mountain wall,— 10

Over the mountains winding down,
Horse and foot, into Frederick town.

Forty flags with their silver stars,
Forty flags with their crimson bars,

Flapped in the morning wind: the sun 15
Of noon looked down, and saw not one.

Up rose old Barbara Frietchie then,
Bowed with her fourscore years and ten;

Bravest of all in Frederick town,
She took up the flag the men hauled down; 20

In her attic-window the staff she set,
To show that one heart was loyal yet.

Up the street came the rebel tread,
Stonewall Jackson riding ahead.

Under his slouched hat left and right 25
He glanced: the old flag met his sight.

"Halt!"—the dust-brown ranks stood fast,
"Fire!"—out blazed the rifle-blast.

It shivered the window, pane and sash;
It rent the banner with seam and gash. 30

Quick, as it fell, from the broken staff
Dame Barbara snatched the silken scarf;

She leaned far out on the window-sill,
And shook it forth with a royal will.

"Shoot, if you must, this old gray head, 35
But spare your country's flag," she said.

A shade of sadness, a blush of shame,
Over the face of the leader came;

The nobler nature within him stirred
To life at that woman's deed and word: 40

"Who touches a hair of yon gray head
Dies like a dog! March on!" he said.

All day long through Frederick street
Sounded the tread of marching feet:

All day long that free flag tost 45
Over the heads of the rebel host.

Ever its torn folds rose and fell
On the loyal winds that loved it well;

And through the hill-gaps sunset light
Shone over it with a warm good-night. 50

Barbara Frietchie's work is o'er,
And the Rebel rides on his raids no more.

Honor to her! and let a tear
Fall, for her sake, on Stonewall's bier.

Over Barbara Frietchie's grave, 55
Flag of Freedom and Union, wave!

Peace and order and beauty draw
Round thy symbol of light and law;

And ever the stars above look down
On thy stars below in Frederick town!

Wonderful post, Z, and a powerful quote by George Washington. How far we have wandered.

I never fail to get a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes when I saw the flag at a parade...or even singing the Star Spangled Banner at a ball game.

Long may she wave indeed!!!

Very nice tribute, Z.

Like Christian soldier, our flag flies every day and every night and yes, we have a spotlight on it at night.

God bless America.

Sadly, the 3rd verse of Star Spangled Banner was expunged during WWII because it offended our British allies. I hope today that they realize it was about not an idea and not any particular nation.

FJ: From Wikipedia on the FLAG: "The flag is a complex and contentious symbol, around which emotions run high."

Um....WHAAAAA?????????????

Beamish, thanks.....

Priscilla...There isn't one great rendition of GRAND OLD FLAG available..the Cagney one (my favorite) is prohibited! Darn. Thanks for the words. I sure did try to link the song. LOVE it.
(apparently, Wikipedia doesn't, huh?)

Cube..good on you! Mr. Z's just getting around to it at noon now.

Always, glad you're hanging yours, too. Re; your 'snagging' the German cartoon, I'm glad you did, but where'd you put it??XX

Carol, thanks for the link. It's an honor.

Beverly, ME, TOO!!! We said the pledge at church today...I'd had red/white/blue flowers deliv'd and stuck some small flags into the arrangements. They wanted more but I said "Leave something for the FOURTH!", right!? :-)

Shoprat...you mean PC started back THEN!?

Hermit.thanks for the poem. What about your people???

Z, pretty sad when a classical American song can't be found.

I guess someone owns the rights to the Cagney version huh?

I have an amazing thing, that I no longer fly anymore for fear of discoloration.

I have an actual 48-state flag, which I keep in storage.

Social Studies question, kids: which two states are NOT on that flag?

I'm with Beverly. The flag and National Anthem brings me to tears.
Love of county is something you learn early in life...if your're
lucky.

Travel the world as I have, seeing
Ol'Glory in the airport brings a
wonderful pride and comfort in my heart, second to none.
Thanks Beamish for ALL of the words!
