Sunday Faith Blog; BURNED BISCUITS!?

I got this wonderful email and wanted to share it with you:
"When I was a kid, my mom liked to make breakfast food for dinner every now & then. And I remember one night in particular when she had made breakfast after a long, hard day at work. On that evening so long ago, my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage and extremely burned biscuits in front of my dad. I remember waiting to see if anyone noticed! Yet all my dad did was reach for his biscuit, smile at my mom and ask me how my day was at school. I don't remember what I told him that night, but I do remember watching him smear butter and jelly on that biscuit and eat every bite!
When I got up from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom apologize to my dad for burning the biscuits. And I'll never forget what he said: "Honey, I love burned biscuits."
Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy good night and I asked him if he really liked his biscuits burned. He wrapped me in his arms and said, "Your Momma put in a hard day at work today and she's real tired. And besides a little burnt biscuit never hurt anyone!"
You know, life is full of imperfect things.....and imperfect people. I'm not the best at hardly anything, and I forget birthdays and anniversaries just like everyone else.

What I've learned over the years is that learning to accept each others faults - and choosing to celebrate each others differences - is one of the most important keys to creating a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship.
And that's my prayer for you today. That you will learn to take the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of your life and lay them at the feet of God. Because in the end, He's the only One who will be able to give you a relationship where a burnt biscuit isn't a deal-breaker!"

"Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use; it will be measured to you." Luke 6:35-38

Z: And, no...you will NOT find a recipe for burned biscuits at Mac 'n GeeeeeZ BUT, you WILL find an excellent and rather inventive recipe for the perfect roast chicken and chicken stock made all at the same time! Have a wonderful, blessed Sunday....

Z that was a wonderful and inspiring post. You're dad sounds like one heck of a guy!

No need for the recipe for burnt bisquits. I got the recipe for burnt bagels from my grandparents and it's been a closely guarded secret in our family for generations.

Jingo, no...it's an email I got.
But, My dad WAS ONE HECK OF A GUY!
Glad you liked it.

Beth, exactly!

Good morning Z, What a wonderful husband and father. You share the most touching, poignant, valuable emails, dear lady. Thank you.

It's wonderful there are men in the world who appreciate the efforts of their wives, even when the results of those efforts are less than perfect. That's the stuff of love and respect .... and a righteous way of life.

You may find this strange, but I acutally like the taste of burnt toast with cheesy scrambled eggs and ham. I think I'll cook that for Sunday brunch.

Happy Faith Sunday, Z and all here at Geeeeez.

What a wonderful reminder for us all! I, personally, need to be more tolerant...especially since we are starting a new work week. I usually end up quoting (in my mind) that famous line from 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'..."Morons! I've got morons on my team!"

Thanks for the reminder to think before I react!

and Good Morning to all of you!
Thanks for the confirmation that this is such an important and touching message......I'm glad you enjoyed it.

FairWitness, I actually like some things slightly burned, too! and Bon Appetit!

Sue, how wonderful. I'm glad this story made an impression ... I hope your week goes better than others xxx
We ALL need that reminder, don't we.

Beautiful!

Come to my house I have never failed in burning biscuits or rolls, oh wait, the rolls can be used as baseballs, lol! Actually it isn't funny I am not allowed to make them anymore. Pillsbury anyone?

Well, given the collection of burnt biscuits and imperfections I've collected over the years, this explains why our dear Father has spared and blest me so much of late.
What a beautiful post Z. It is very much what I needed today. Thank you and be richly blest.

I burn my biscuits regularly, figuratively and literally.

What a great story and what a great man the father/husband was. That is wisdom and love as it should be.

Great Post Z,

"Love transcends imperfections."

Beth, so true.
If it weren't, we'd all be very lonely.

Exactly the kind of message we need to hear and an excellent prescription for the way we should choose to respond to all the things other people do that don't particularly please us.

Being cheerful and tolerant, whether you feel like it or not, and being gracious to and considerate of others at all times is THE way to live.

So simple, isn't it?

The problem is our desperate need to extend all this courtesy and understanding to those who deliberately choose to annoy or offend us.

Thanks for your weekly message Z.
You are Zee best.

I dunno. Sweet of course, but I keep thinking -- what about just scraping off -- or sawing as the case may be -- the burnt part? I do that all the time with the toast that regularly sets off my hyperactive smoke alarm. Good as new.

Jen, very cute line....so true about all of us!

Malcontent, thanks and thanks for coming by...

Faith...what kind of story and lesson would that have given us?! :-)

Maybe it's the piece of Cherokee in me, but I like a little burnt edges on bread and biscuits. Well, I don't mind it at least, as long as they're not scorched black.

Cherokee natives used to season their boiled corn dishes with ashes from the cooking fire. Of course, salt and pepper wasn't exactly on the spice rack for them.

not ONE comment on the chicken recipe I linked to at the bottom of this post...didn't anybody read all the way down? :-)

tsk tsk tsk !!!

I think you missed the whole point of the email. That father & husband sent the message that he loved unconditionally his wife and the mother of his daughter. Furthermore, he demonstrated to them that he RESPECTED that woman so much that he'd eat and enjoy anything she put the effort into making. EVEN burned biscuits.

What kind of message would scraping the burnt parts off send to his wife and family? Certainly not the one he chose to send.

Z, the roast chicken recipe sounds delicious and I plan to use that recipe soon. Thanks for posting it.

I'm always looking for new recipes and this one sounds like a really yummy one.

FW..oh, good. I thought it sounded wonderful, too. Let me know!

FairWitness said...

Ok, Z. I also shared it with my Facebook page. You might get some new visitors to Mac 'N Geeeeez.

Z said...

thanks, FW..I'd like that! And I hope they enjoy it.

Oh of course I got the message, but I couldn't stop thinking about how there was a simpler solution than just eating all that charcoal. Sorry, I know I'm a wet blanket.

Oh and the chicken recipe sounds very good, and I thought I'd eventually get around to it, except I don't think I have the right kind of pan and rack. I like the idea of making broth directly from the drippings like that, and you can still make more from the bones after you eat the chicken too.

Z said...

Faith, my racks aren't bigger than a large pan, either...but my sis thought putting a normal rack (like a cookie cooler rack?) on the pan's rim CRISS CROSS might work, the chicken will hang over, I guess, but it's worth a try?!
I, too, like the idea of having instant broth like that...
Obviously, boiling a chicken will also give that result but this sounds easier plus, while I love boiled chicken for sandwiches, chicken curry, etc., this roasting method for broth is intriguing, isn't it.
